How to create a Foundry VTT world on The Forge

Introduction

Foundry worlds, also sometimes called Foundry games or just “games” or “worlds” are self-contained instances full of data, where gameplay takes place. In other words, they are the places where a traditional RPG campaign would created in, takes place, and otherwise runs within Foundry Virtual Tabletop. If you are gaming within Foundry Virtual Tabletop, you are gaming within a world.

Foundry VTT does a great job of making it easy to create a world. We like to think that we make it even easier through our Game Manager feature. We explain below how to create a Foundry VTT world below, via the setup menu, via The Forge’s Game Manager feature, via importing, and via world installation.

Installing a System

Before creating/installing a world, you will need to have a system installed on your Forge account. Without a system, the world will be unable to function. A system basically lets Foundry VTT know how to interpret the data of a world- without a system installed, a world cannot function. And if you are installing a pre-made/existing world, you will need to install the system that the world requires.

If you install a world through The Bazaar, it will automatically install the required system for the world to function, if the system is not already installed. Otherwise, you will need to take the following steps.

Installing a system through The Bazaar

(This method will work for users with Game Manager enabled, and without Game Manager enabled.)

  1. Login to The Forge, if you are not already logged in.
  2. Navigate to the “Game Systems” tab in The Forge, which you can find here.
  3. Here, you can scroll through every system on The Forge. By default, they are sorted by percentage of users who have the system installed, from greatest to least. If you are looking for a particular obscure system, you can use the search bar to the left to find it.
  4. Find the system you wish to install.
  5. Select the green “Install” button. The system should install instantly.
  6. If you are not using the Game Manager, restart your Foundry instance to finish installing the system.

The system should be installed, and you are now free to create/install a world.

Installing a system through Foundry VTT’s setup menu (Not recommended)

If you have Game Manager enabled, these steps will not work, and you will need to use The Bazaar. Also, please note that The Bazaar will automatically fetch the latest system version compatible with your version of Foundry VTT, while this method will always grab the latest version of a system.

  1. Login to The Forge, if you are not already logged in.
  2. Launch your Foundry instance on The Forge.
  3. If you are logged into a world, return to the Foundry VTT setup menu.
  4. Navigate to the Game Systems tab.
  5. At the bottom of the menu, select the left “Install System” button.
  6. Select the system you want to/need to install, and select the “Install” button for that system.
  7. Wait for the system to install- this should be relatively quick, since you do not have to download the entire system on The Forge.

The system should be installed, and you are now free to create/install a world.
