I’m looking for a way to ask my players (not their characters) questions and receive the answer back without revealing what their answers are to everyone else? Is there a way to do that? My search hasn’t turned up anything but i thought this would be something someone has done somewhere. It does seem basic.

In chat, you can always prefix your text with /whisper (or shorthand /w) followed by your target to whisper your chat message to a specific user. Your players would need to reply by doing /w GM the response in order to send the response as a whisper to you only.
