Issue with me (GM) and players constanly disconnecting and logged out from the forge

This problem has been going on for a while (around 2 months) where during the game (20:30 GMT+7 Saturday) I and my players would constantly disconnect from the game and asset won’t load. The server I used is Asia, which I heard that there’s constant issue as well. Is there any good way to resolve this?

Hello Ellenna, thank you for bringing this to our attention. I’ll forward this information to our infrastructure team to check if they can see what is happening from our end, and from your end I have a couple of questions:

  • Is the disconnection issue consistent every day?
  • Are all of your players in the same region?
  • Can you confirm you’re not losing network connection? (ie. your router is rebooting at designated time) You can setup a constant ping test to run towards Forge during the expected d/c time.

  • The disconnection happens frequently every Saturday during my gametime (20:30 - 00:00 GMT+7)
  • All of my players, me included are in Asia region. I am in Japan and my players are in Thailand
  • I’m not sure how to set up ping test, but I could try. The network is not losing connection, as my discord chat works normally.

As a matter of note, 2 of my Thai based-GM reported they had this issue as well

Hi Aki,

I’m the OP’s friend and I’m also GMing a session on The Forge from Thailand. I have been facing the same issue, and it has been annoying me for almost 2–3 weeks now (I can’t remember the exact time). My sessions last week were on Wednesday and Sunday night (20:30–00:00 GMT+7), and both sessions faced these same issues.

In response to your queries:

Is the disconnection issue consistent every day?
A: Based on what I have experienced, yes, especially during peak hours at night.

Are all of your players in the same region?
A: Yes, they are all from Thailand.

Can you confirm you’re not losing network connection? (e.g., your router is rebooting at a designated time)
A: Before anyone gets kicked out of Foundry, that user’s latency spikes, jumping from 30ms to 300–500ms within 5 seconds. It happens to all of us in a sequence; after player 1 is kicked to the login page, player 2 follows, until everyone is kicked out and forced to re-login (myself included). The re-login time is very long—it takes 3–5 minutes or more. When you finally get back in, some of the images don’t load, which really ruins the experience.

Finally, I don’t think this is an internet connection issue. Our players use different internet service providers, so the idea that we are all losing connection simultaneously due to a single ISP is invalid.

I hope this helps, and I look forward to hearing an update from The Forge team.

Alright, that is interesting info, thank you both.
I’m wondering if the issue is indeed happening due to server load, with Saturday night being prime time for games.

Would you be able to run test games during weekdays around that time?
Approximately how far into the session does the issue usually happen?
Can you test if the issue happens with Safe Configuration enabled?

How to ping the Forge, sorry should’ve explained this. If you’re Windows, open the command prompt and type ping -t as.forge-vtt.com , do this when you start your session and it will run a continuous ping at Forge. If you see any lost packets, then that would mean you’re losing connection to the Forge.

I ran a game today, starting up my foundry (22:35 GMT+9 Friday) and the issue happens again where I get kicked out of my server before the game became stable. The issue occur immediately when I managed to load into the game, where the journal, token art, and character sheet fail to load and if I refresh, I was logged back out to forge login screen. This happen twice before the game is stabilized.

When I logged in during the day earlier (11:00) the server works normally for one hour until I decided to close it.

There is almost no packet loss when I use Ping tool

It is happening again. The game starts at 22:45 but entered my world at 22:10. Here are my logs

22:10 The Game is working fine

22:16 Refreshed. Loaded back successfully

22:21 Refreshed. One player joined.

22:22 Kicked Out of forge

22:25 Logged back in

22:43 Working as normal. All players joined

23:10: First Scene Change. Two players kicked out of the forge

23:41: Everyone got kicked except one player

23:46: Cannot Connect

23:56 I am Unable to connect. Two players out of 5 can connect.

00:12: Another discord GM running game on the forge informed me that there’s simillar issue as well with their game.

00:19 Finally able to connect back in. Two players had issues still of unable to get into the game.

02:00 Game concluded.

Hey Ellenna, thank you for this report. There is definitely a pattern here, we’ll investigate this ASAP.

You said all but one player got kicked out, was that one player outside Asia?

All players are in Thailand, except me, who is in Japan

Hey there folks, this issue has been bugging me as well, as well as a few other staff members. We’ve investigated the matter and our devs think they have found the problem, and have a PR incoming. Keep an eye on our announced release notes for a fix.
