What login do I use? Why does my login fail?

Introduction

Here at The Forge, we get a lot of questions about failed logins. These issues happen to a lot of people, for a variety of reasons- to the point that they are one of our most common support requests. We attempt to outline the various login credentials associated with Foundry Gaming, Foundry VTT, and The Forge- as well as how to fix issues you might be experiencing with them.

Accounts and Logins

Foundry Gaming Account

Foundry Gaming LLC is the company who develops Foundry Virtual Tabletop. To obtain a Foundry license key, you must create an account on their website, and purchase the key there. This is usually where your Foundry Gaming account will come from.

You can do the following with your Foundry Gaming account:

  • Manage your Foundry licenses on the Foundry VTT website.
  • Purchase Foundry licenses and other premium content on the Foundry VTT website.
  • Download Foundry VTT for self-hosting.

You cannot do the following with your Foundry Gaming account:

  • Log in to The Forge.
  • Log in to your Foundry VTT application/game.

Forge Account

The Forge VTT Inc. is the company behind The Forge, a hosting service for Foundry Virtual Tabletop software. Usually, people will create an account on our service in order to have their games hosted, or in order to play within a private game on our service.

You can do the following with your Forge account:

  • Manage your games and related content hosted on The Forge.
  • Purchase a hosting subscription, and premium packages on The Bazaar.
  • While logged in, access private games on The Forge (Please keep in mind you will never log into The Forge at the Foundry game’s login screen)

You cannot do the following with your Forge account:

  • Login to the FoundryVTT website.
  • Login to your Foundry VTT instance/application. If a game is using the User Manager feature, it will automatically skip the login screen . You will NEVER have to put in your Forge account details at a Foundry game’s login screen.

Foundry VTT Admin Access Key

If you are self-hosting Foundry Virtual Tabletop, or hosting on The Forge without Game Manager enabled, the Setup menu can be locked with an admin access key. This is to prevent casual access of behind the scenes information by your players, or allow destructive use of the setup menu’s functions by anyone who accesses your table’s URL.

This is called an access key rather than a password because the admin access key is not entirely secure. While we recommend making an admin access key hard to guess, you should not reuse a password used for a real account service.

We do not recommend setting an admin access key on The Forge, unless there is a co-DM within your games. This is because The Forge already authenticates users without admin access keys, making sure that only the account owner can access the setup menu. By setting an admin access key, anyone who knows the key will be able to access your setup menu.

You can do the following with your Foundry VTT admin access key:

  • Access your Foundry VTT setup menu, after the server has been started/restarted.
  • Return to the Foundry VTT setup menu from a currently active world.

You cannot do the following with your Foundry VTT admin access key:

  • Log into The Forge.
  • Log into the Foundry VTT website.
  • Log into a world with the access key, unless a user has been given the same access key by the GM.

Resetting your Foundry admin access key

The Forge makes it easy to reset your admin access key. To reset the access key, navigate to the game/table in your Forge Setup menu. Select the backspace/delete button highlighted below, to the right of the Foundry setup admin key. This will allow you to edit the existing key, and create a new one to access your table with.

Once you are done editing the Foundry setup admin key, navigate to the bottom of the web page, and select the green “Save Changes” button.

Foundry VTT Game Access Key

When a Foundry world is created on a self-hosted instance, or on The Forge without User Manager enabled, it will generate a single user (the GM) by default. The GM will be generated without an access key, but the GM can add one for themselves, as well as for other players that they wish to create.

Therefore, the GM, and any other user with the GM role can create users, and give them game access keys. Again, these are called “access keys” because these access keys are not entirely secure. Ideally, the access keys should be hard to guess- but you should not reuse a password used for a real account service. Necessarily, the GM creating a user must know that user’s password to create and share it.

You can do the following with a a Foundry VTT game access key:

  • Login to a Foundry game as the user corresponding to that game access key.

You cannot do the following with a game access key:

  • Login to the setup menu with that access key, unless they have been set deliberately the same.
  • Login to any actual account whatsoever (hopefully).
